On January 15, 2014, I hosted my first ever live online office hours. I spoke to a number of professionals in all stages of their careers, from job seekers to those looking to make a career transition. I was so excited by the diverse questions that were asked – from how to optimize your LinkedIn profile to my top tips for impressing recruiters, we covered all the bases!
One of the topics that I talked about was how to succeed in the job search. I taught listeners my proven PROACTIVE formula for achieving your dream job! Here are the first four steps:
P – Persistence: If you have a dream, you owe it to yourself to achieve it. But, your path may be a bit messy – you could stray from it at times and, yes, you will experience setbacks. Go into it recognizing that you may receive more rejections than you were planning on and don’t let anything deter you!
R – Research: Doing your homework will be critical to your success. Before you set your sights on an opportunity, be sure to examine your targeted industry, organization, and roles. When you’re doing this, take into consideration your strengths, goals, and the opportunities for growth that are available.
O – Keep an open mind: Sometimes, when your goals are too specific, you end up running the risk of closing yourself off to amazing new opportunities. You can take a number of different paths and still gain the experience you need to land your dream job. So, keep an open mind by talking to as many people as possible, searching for roles in industries that you may be unfamiliar with, and connecting with high performers who can give you insights into what it takes to achieve your goals!
