PhD graduate lands role at target company with no previous work experience.

What was your situation prior to entering the coaching program?

Prior to contacting Diana, I was finishing up my 5th year of graduate school and getting ready to defend my thesis. Upon graduation, I hoped to go into bioinformatics but didn’t have any professional experience to draw on since I went straight from my undergrad to
graduate school.

I wasn’t sure how to translate my academic experience to the professional world. I felt that my lack of professional experience might hold me back from getting a great role and wanted to make sure I was prepared to overcome this.

Diana was recommended to me and when I met with her I felt that she was the perfect person to guide me from academia into the real world. She has so much experience navigating the corporate and business worlds, plus she is extremely friendly and approachable. I knew she would really try to understand my perspective and goals.

What steps did you take to differentiate your job application?

Diana and I worked on coming up with three key points about my experience to hone my message. These were so important when it came to my interview because I had to be consistent in order to be effective. Diana also taught me how to pitch effectively to employers by conveying all the important information I could in as few words as possible.

She also helped me to see myself as a professional and not only as a student. It was a mindset shift that I needed to achieve so that I could take myself seriously and project confidence to potential employers. Even now that I’m not applying to jobs, I still draw on
this professional image that Diana helped me cultivate in my daily work.

What was your success coming out of your coaching sessions?

Right when Diana and I began to practice one­on­one interviews, I received an interview at my target company. I was so glad I did the extra preparation because this interview was a full day of meeting 8­12 different people who were each evaluating me in their own way. In the end, I was selected as the successful candidate!

Do you have any advice for other professionals in similar positions?

Have confidence in your abilities. This is something that can be hard to do, but to identify your marketable skills and communicate them effectively you have to have confidence in them. I also recommend hiring Diana. The coaching program was a fantastic experience and one of the best decisions I’ve made in terms of my career.
