What was your situation prior to entering the coaching program?

My career background is in finance and I have 17 years of experience in the industry. Up until a year ago, I had established a successful career in Spain, ending up as a Finance Controller at a national subsidiary. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business Administration and an MBA from IE Business School in Madrid.

I had been looking to break into the Canadian market for 8-9 months before connecting with Diana and decided it was time to reach out for professional help. I didn’t know where to turn because I was very active in my job search strategy and was constantly networking but wasn’t seeing success. I also wasn’t sure how to translate my international experience to the Canadian market.

What steps did you take to differentiate your application?

The most important lesson I learned during the coaching program was how to focus my job search. I was doing all the right things before I started working with Diana, but my search lacked focus.

I also learned that I wasn’t selling myself properly. Diana helped me clean up my messaging and resume while identifying aspects of my experience that I could effectively sell. We created an elevator pitch that helped me reinforce the value I bring to the table. She strongly recommended that I network and find opportunities through the hidden job market. The advice that she gave me was that in order to see results I had to network with the right people, which helped me target my strategy.

Do you have any advice for other professionals in similar positions?

Really work on selling yourself and your transferable skills. If you’re immigrating to Canada, re-assess your previous experience and sell it based on what the Canadian market needs. We all take the job search for granted, which is why having a clear strategy and polishing your marketing messages is so important.
